Olivier

Hey guys, I bet by now all of Indonesia has already familiar with Olivier, thanks to the super sensational murder by poison case a while ago... Well, apart from the overnight sensation, Olivier has become one of my new favorite place to eat in 2015. Yes people, it's damn good!

Being a member of the same group with Loewy and Union, they share similar vibe. The vintage decor, the neat servers (and the rudeness too) and the upscale-ish ambiance which attracts Jakarta's trendiest to come running. With the concepts of serving an asian/france fusion casual fine dining, Olivier has a balance offering on both asian food and french food. Personally, I don't have high hopes in a place that serves fusion dish, let alone a restaurant that serves two types of dishes distinctively. Well, I was proven wrong.

Complimentary bread

Crispy crust, warm bread and such delightful spicy butter. Perfect

Roast Chicken with Ratatouille and Mashed Potato (125K IDR)

Hands down the best mashed potato ever! Silky smooth, creamy and buttery. Oh so so so damn good! Chicken is quite big, flavorful and juicy. Served on top oh some sort of juz? Another spot on cooking I might say... The chicken was fragrant, tender and I can really taste a combination of herbs from the chicken, nice..

Dory Meuniere A La Grenobloise, Sauteed French Beans and Cherry Tomatoes (130K IDR)

This dish is good but missing the oomph factor. Everything was spot on somehow forgetable. Maybe it's lacking seasoning?
Chicken Wings with Spicy Marinade (70K IDR)

Another nicely executed dish but lacking the oomph factor. Sure the chicken was crispy and the dips was good but I feel the dish lost the connection to the dips, resulting in a nice and crispy wings but lack in flavor.

After this visit, I came back to Oliver a couple of months ago. I tried the pork belly/pork knuckle for sharing and it was so good! Yummmmm The pork was super tender, skin falling of the meat like cray cray

Recommended place to grab a hearty meal and s chic place to hang out with your dearest. Price is a bit pricey but worth every penny. See you in another time patients

Nomz

Wow... Life's been too hectic guys :( I think it's been 3 months since my last post, so sorry I couldn't post any new yummy entries for you guys.. hehehe

This post is about the hip and trendy restaurant by Masterchef Indonesia Judge, Chef Arnold Poernomo. I bet all of you knows this super popular tv personality. He is indeed a great guy, at my first visit he came to our table for small chit chat. So humble despite the great success he has accomplished in such young age.

Anyway, the place is called... NOMZ

Nomz is one of the many "hits" cafes in Grand Indonesia East Mall. Located across Publik Markette, just outside Central Department Store, it is very strategic. Decor wise, i don't think it's outstanding. Not too fancy, more elegant than rugged... Casual but trendy.

On my first visit, I had their Banh Mi (Couldn't find the pics) A rather soft rendition of this vietnamese sandwich. Chef Arnold told me that instead of using baguette like the authentic bahn mi, he choose a soft roll to make it easier to be eaten. I LOVE the pork belly, melt in your mouth kind of meat, with a dash of sourness from the sauce, the heavy bread becomes somehow lighter.

On another occasion, I tried several dishes. One of them is this Mushroom Linguine...

Personally, I prefer spaghetti. Linguine is somehow too smooth and less chewable... The mushroom linguine I had at Nomz that day was... Okay.. IMO, the cream sauce is too salty. A good cream sauce needs to be creamy yet light at the same time. Seasonings have to be just right since saltiness and creaminess is not best friend. Nomz's was too salty, making the whole dish one dimensional...

Next, I tried the Curry Barramundi

I understand that Nomz is not a restaurant specializing in a certain cuisine. Like many other places nowadays, it tries to deliver a personal taste of the chef, not restricted by any boundaries. A whole new generation of fusion food. For me... fusion food is just a trend, so I never appreciate it much. This curry barramundi... has the texture of japanese curry but the taste of indian curry and the sambal of Indonesia. A deconstructed (or nicely plated indonesian style dish) curry rice where the fish is pan fried and we are supposed to put the curry ON the fish or maybe mix the rice with it (seriously I don't understand it). Sorry Chef, I'm not happy with this..\

Last is the fried squid salad

Of all the dishes I tried there, this is the best. A perfectly fried squid (no fishy smell, not chewy, no burnt taste and seasoned balancely) mixed with arugula and balsamic dressing. Refreshing, fragrant and an appetizing appetizer. LOVE it

So.. My verdict is... Well, I don't think I will be coming back (maybe for their cakes?)

Coco Curry Ichibanya

Holaaa mina san, O genki desu ka?

This post is about one of my fave Japanese Food, curry! Ever since I met Japanese Curry, I fell in love with it. The smooth creamy thick brown liquid over a plate of warm steamed rice, oh so addictive! Japanase curry unique characteristics differs it from other curries aroun the world. Most of the world's curry comes in a more liquid consistency, less creamy and more spicy. Apart from it, I think japanese curry is an ultimate comfort food

Coco Curry Ichibanya is a place which main purpose is serving us the most delicious Japanese Curry. Since it's been a long time since I dine at Coco Curry Ichibanya, I will only go over some superficial detail

Starting from the tuna salad, the veggies are fresh, crunchy and not bitter at all. Putting some mayo tuna salad on top is brilliant. The dressing is basically thousand island with japanese touch, a bit sour and watery compared to the americe style thousand island dressing. I love how a bite of the salad will take u into a refreshing blast.

I ordered the breaded mince beef curry rice and it was a foul decision. The curry, yum! Perfect consistency, perfect heat and bits of cheese for some extra jolt of yumminess. IMO, not the best but surely tastes good. The curry lacks boldness. The minced beef is soggy and tasteless, not good :(

My sis ordered this gooey creamy omu rice and it was awesome!! Once u cut through that egg, the filling will ooze out, heavenly! I love how the omurice tastes creamy but not too creamy. The creaminess of the omellete amplifies the curry's creaminess.

Overall, I think Coco Curry Ichibanya is a place worth visiting. Since the price is quite affordable, I'm sure many high school or university students will find this place perfect for their weekend :)

Benedict

Happy May Day everyone! To celebrate the start of May, I'll present you... Benedict

Benedict is one of the new hip spot in Jakarta. Location? None other than Grand Indonesia. This place has become to hub of everything classy, luxurious and hip. I find myself amused with all the eateries in this area.. All of them are so hip and current, tastes real good (and yeah quite expensive) and easy to find.

Benedict is a member of Union group, a restaurant group that never fails. Unlike their competitors such is Ismaya or Boga, Union group is more consistent in creating amazing restaurants. Their joints are not only trendy, decorated nicely but also yummy! Benedict's main ammo is their breakfast food. There are not many places for brunch in Jakarta. Some of them are coffee places that also serves brunch menu. Benedict is the opposite, they specialize in serving breakfast menus and also good coffee.

 Florentine Egg Benedict (Rp. 85.000)

Egg Benedict with cured salmon, dill, baby spinach and tobikko. Yummylicious! The oozing egg yolk combined with lovely texture of the salmon, the buttery hollandaise sauce and the salty crunchy texture of the tobikko is a perfect harmony.

 Latte

Good cofffee by Toby Estate
Vanilla ice cream with maple syrup and bacon

Seriously! What could be more fun than trying this menu. I don't think its great but having this ice cream is why I love eating #gluttonyalert. It's that new sensation at the tip of your tongue that makes me ecstatic
 Scotch Eggs (Rp. 35.000)

Boiled egg wrapped inside minced chicken, served with bonito flakes and mayo. Another new addiction. Oh damn I love this egg!

Benedict is a recommended place for you guys to go brunch or just having a chit chat in Grand Indonesia. My only concern is the small portion, doesn't fit the male clientele. I'm a fat guy big appetite, so.... maybe... It's me not the portion :(

Publik Markette

Publik Markette is one of the newest addition to Ismaya Group. As one of the leading restaurant/lifestyle business group, it is indeed the market leader (in close competition with Union group IMO in terms of quality). Not like the earlier establishments such as Sushi Groove and Pizza E Birra, Ismaya is now more focused on quality.

Meet Publik Markette, a gem in Grand Indonesia. Definitely a strong contender in the endless fab eatery in Grand Indonesia. IMO, best concept so far. Publik Markette offers casual settings to fancy food.

Take a look at the carefully decorated place, love every details. Fancy yet somehow feels homey and laid back. The food court concept is not new but Publik Markette takes it into another level. All u need to do there is show your table number (in the form of a stick on your table) and start drool around the lavish food court style showcase.

As an avid pork addict, I instantly pick the pork belly. The pork belly is served with a sort of cranberry sauce and my choice of briyani rice as a side dish. The side dish is unfortunately not included.

The pork belly is superb! Super crispy skin, tender pork belly with a tangy note from the sauce. My side dish is not exactly in perfect sync but hey, what could go wrong with rice? :) IMO, one of the best pork belly ever, totally in love!

Another dish we tried that day is the BBQ beef brisket. The brisket is also yummy! Served with the english muffin and baby potatoes, a total tummy pleaser. The melting fat from the brisket makes me went awww....

For the coffee, they serve coffees from D'Journal (another Ismaya's establishment). Not bad for certainly not good. Well, it is not the place for coffee so I don't think it matters.

My verdict, a must try and I will come again for more yummy bites. Love the ambiance, love the food but not the price tag. Main course set you around 120-150K IDR and side dish 30K IDR. Drinks are around 30-50K IDR. One thing I fond of this place is the portion of the food. It's pretty, it's yummy AND it's not ridiculously small!!!! Recommended

Mangia

A little break from my Hongkong post, now I'm gonna post a review about Mangia, a chic and hip restaurant that has caught my attention from maybe a year ago but never got the time to try.

Mangia has opened a new outlet in Grand Indonesia. Apparently, Grand Indonesia has done an impressive job creating a trendy dining place in its 5th floor. Can't wait to try 'em all :)

Anyway... Let's talk about Mangia. I notice that Mangia is a fusion restaurant. Judging from the artsy design, a place that serve "beautiful foo", the perfect place for makan makan cantik :p The decor is their Grand Indonesia outlet is a bit strange... The dominant grey walls combined with the pretty artsy stag head on the wall and flowers? It's confusing... And IMO the place is a bit too dark (and not to mention HOT)

The food:
1. Creamy Baked Potato (39.000 IDR)

YUMMY!!! This is not your ordinary baked potato... First, the potato is mashed but still has small chunks in it, mixed with cream and herbs and then baked with cheese. Presented on a bed of cream spinach and slices of bacon.. Heaven.. Potato, GREAT! Good consistency, creamy and fragrant, nice one Mangia. The spinach needs a bit of cooking, if only it is a wee bit softer, it would have been perfect.

2. Nasi Jeruk Sambal Dori (44.000 IDR)
This is supposed to be the recommended menu of Mangia. A signature dish of Mangia, consisting of fried rice with orange leaf and pan fried dori with sambal matah. Okay... Despite of the praise from people, I find this dish.. Meh...

An attempt to create a signature dish, a fusion dish gone wrong. Firstly, the rice... It is TOO DRY. I almost choked eating the rice... The orange leaf is too much. Seriously... The texture is BAD. Dry rice with leaves.. What could be worse? I get that they want to serve a herby, modern indonesian fusion dish but IMO not executed well enough. The dory with sambal matah is good, dory is cooked perfectly and goes very well with the spicy yet not lethal sambal matah.

Overall, I think the place is good, a little fix is needed here and there but with the affordable price, the cute ambiance and the unique menu, they will survive.

Deltoro's BBQ Ribs and Steak

Deltoro's in Grand Indonesia has tickled my curiosity for a while. I've been passing through this ribs and steak for several times and this place always offers some sort of credit card discount. Finally, I gave in to my carnivorous desire and dragged Asmet with me to have a Flintstone session *grin*

The place is a generic mall resto. Wooden interior with several sofa cubicle and square tables. The decor is really standard, a bit disappointed considering they put a high price on their menu. The waiters are attentive and understand the menu so that's a plus from me.

The food:
1. Deltoro's US Pork Spare Rib (Rp. 200.000/Full Slab)

YUMMY!!!! The us ribs are sooo tender. I'm not a big fan of that pricey rib place so for me finding this affordable ribs with good quality is a blessing :) Only available in BBQ sauce despite the 3 options available in the menu, this is a must try. Humongous ribs in a huge plate that can satisfy my gigantic appetite, nicee :) The BBQ sauce has a tangy flavor layered with sweetness that seeps through the ribs. The bones the spare ribs is so tender, you can eat it if u want. The meat is marinated nicely, juicy and tender. The mashed potato is just okay, slightly above average :)

2. Balinese Original Local Pork Baby Back Ribs (Rp. 184.000/Full Slab)

Another giant piece of meat landed on our table and again satisfying. Although I prefer the spare ribs, this one is also yummy. The meat is not as tender as the US ribs but the traditional feel is a very interesting. Resembling those traditional ribs joined, the sweetness from sweet soy sauce dominates this dish. With hints of spiciness and the sambal available, all we need is a plate of hot rice to make this dish unforgetable.

A recommended place for u carnivores!

The Duel (Roppan VS Magnum Cafe)

Hallooooo, back with me dr B :)
Untuk The Duel kali ini temanya ada dessert!!!! Kontestan nya adalah 2 dessert place yang lagi happening banget di Jakarta yaitu Magnum Cafe dan Roppan. Let The Duel begins...

Magnum Cafe

BUT in terms of ambiance, Ismaya jagonya. That's why, tiap kali ada resto baru by Ismaya, gw pasti pengen nyoba. After all, dining is not always bout the food, it's all about the experience :)

Terletak di Grand Indonesia, Magnum Cafe merupakan salah satu go to spot disono. Antriannya selalu panjang menjijikan. Kenapa bisa ngantri ampe kaya gitu, gw sendiri juga ga ngerti. Sebenernya sih males banget ngantri tapi ya sudah lah, demi mencoba hehe

Tempat nya seh asik menurut gw. Nyaman, rapih, detail oriented dan yang paling penting adalah punya WOW factor. This is what Ismaya do best after all. Tamu nya semua dianggap sebagai bangsawan disana, dipanggil nya bukan pake "Pak" atau "Bu" tapi pake "My Lord". Emank sih ga penting tapi it's something different right? Nice service though, attentive and fast.

The food:
1. Summer Tango (Rp. 29.000)

YUMMY!!! Basically ini mango smoothies with choco chip. Jadi ini jus mangga tapi dikasi magnum vanilla. It's sweet with a hint of sour, ada terasa choco chip yang uda di blender jadi alus alus gitu dan rasa mangga nya jd agak creamy. Love it :D

2. Waffle de Regalia Queen Size (Rp. 45.000)

Sebagai orang yang sangat sangat menyukai dessert, ice cream, roti including waffle, makanan ini merupakan sebuah penghinaan terhadap waffle!!!!!!!! OMG, this is the worst waffle ever deh. Mana ada waffle kenyellll, gw uda kaya makan mochi aje. Parah banget... It looks amazing but tastes like ****. Very disappointing!!!!

Walopun tempat nya menyenangkan buat nongkrong2 tp kalo kualitas makanannya kaya gini seh engga deh makasih. Gw mau nyoba menu laen nya jadi males...

Roppan

Pertama kali gw ngeliat Roppan tuh di Pejaten Village kalo ga sala. Dari luar reklame nya catchy banget. Very anime and kawaii hehe Secara dari namanya aja uda roti, gw uda napsu nih. I'm Aris and I'm a bread addict :p Tapiiii gw makannya bukan di Pejaten, gw makan ini di Gandaria City :)

The place is nice! Dibagi 2 area, area take away en area dine in. Di tempat take away itu bisa milih2 bermacam2  roti panggang yang sangat sangat sangat menarik. Kemudian decor nya didominasi light brown wooden furniture with a touch red. Very eye catching and cozy.

The food:
1. Matcha Honey Toast with Matcha and Ogura Ice Cream (Rp.27.273)

Gw pesen salah satu menu spesial nya... This kind of toast is not common. The best one is by En Dining and their's was really really good. Toast nya sendiri menurut gw enak! Garing tp ga kering... Kemudian kulit luar nya roti yang berbentuk kotak itu juga garing. Sebenernya gw malah lebi suka makan kulitnya hehe Sayang sekali isi nya yang menurut gw kurang maksimal. Alasannya? Simpel... Pelit bener eskrimnya!!!! Kayanya pake scoop yang gedean juga masi untung gede deh -_- Rasa eskrim nya dicampur honey en roti nya seh pas ya. Ogura ice cream nya kurang ok, ato mungkin terlalu dikit kali ya. Karena rasa ogura ga se mencolok rasa matcha jadi kalo dimakan sama rotinya jd kurang berasa gitu.

Overall I like this place... Of course the menu could do some improvements but this is not a high end eatery. Harganya terjangkau, tempat nya bagus dan kualitas makanannya cukup lumayan. Buat tempat nongkrong-nongkrong gitu pas banget :)

So... It's time for the verdict... The winner is... Roppan!!!!!!!!!!!!! As I said, dining is about the experience. Magnum Cafe maybe an eight in terms of ambiance but Roppan is a well rounded place with affordable price :)

Katsusei

Hellllloooooooooooooo patients!!!!! It's been a while :)

I've been sooo busy the last couple of months.Moved to Depok, stayed in Jogjakarta and finishing my med study :) Things are better now, at least not as hectic as it used to be. I apologized patients for the lack of yummy updates but rest assured there will be lots and lots yummy food ahead :D

For the first review, dr. B gives u.... Katsusei!

I believe many of u had heard bout this place before... Located in Grand Indonesia, next to Toranomon, it's a place that specializes in Katsu food a.k.a Japanese fried food. Just like many many many Jakartans my age, we were raised basically on KFC and Hoka Hoka Bento. Both of them are on the top 3 of my favorite fast food chain. I remembered how I used to LOVE chicken katsu by HokBen (not anymore though, moved on to spring roll!! :p)

When I browsed the menu for the first time in front of the restaurant a couple of years ago, I was shocked! Damn... This place is like PRICEY. So I decided, no Katsusei for me unless they give 50% discount. Finally, God answered my prayer and give 50% discount using Mandiri Card (the one I borrowed from my dear Uncle Apau hehehe)

The outer part of the restaurant radiates a calming, mysterious yet posh charm that lures every passerby. Once you enter the restaurant, you'll see a very neat seating placements, divided by glass wall decorated by ceramic bowls. The decor is your garden variety minimalist and dark ambiance. For me, it's just ok. Nothing special here. The ceramic bowl on glass wall is... tacky. The open kitchen is too close to the dining area and they kinda miss the japanese details on the table.

After u order , u will be given some pots of dressing. There are two types of dressings I remembered, the sour one (imagine italian dressing japanese style) and the savoury one (thousand island with japanese touch). Besides the dressing, they also give a big pot of sauce for the katsu. I dunno the name but they sure taste yummy! U will also be given a bowl of tare (sesame seed) to be mixed with the katsu sauce. U are supposed to ground the sesame seed according to ur liking. Cute huh? I love that part for sure hehehehe

Move on to the main course....

1. Shrimp and Pork Sirloin Katsu Set (Rp. 195.000)

Two giant Shrimp Katsu and a big chunk of pork sirloin katsu. The presentation, Love it! Served on a tray filled with japanese rice, some sort of japanese pickles, japanese salad, and miso soup. The rice, perfect! Pour the dressing and just finish it!!! The cabbage was fresh and crisp. I prefer the savoury/salty dressing but I suggest u mix it and find ur perfect dressing. Now the soup... The waiter offered two soups. The first one being miso soup and the other is a different miso style soup but with pork bits and carrots. I tried both of them and loved them both. The miso is yummy, a bit salty but I do love salty food. The pork soup is heaven. Period. YUMMY!!!!!! The soup was brothy, meaty and sweet. Love, love, love it.

Next the katsu. After the first bite, I made my judgement. The best katsu I ever had in my life. The prawn katsu consists of two prawns each. The prawns were fresh and sweet, I didn't get any rash (I'm allergic to non fresh prawns) so I think it's very good. The pork sirloin... Just melted in my mouth. It was tender, it was juicy, fried to perfection. Yummylicious!! Dip it into the tare sauce and u'll have another salty kick to ur already awesome katsu. *drooling while writing this*

2. Chicken Katsu Nabe Set (Rp. 130.000)

I opted for chicken to try how the chicken dish tastes like. The katsu nabe set is served on a tray, similar to the katsu set. The nabe was placed on a hot plate so it maintained it's hotness. The chicken katsu is drenched is some brown liquid and topped with egg. Oh geez.... It's an oyako-don but minus the don. Another cooked to perfection chicken katsu. I love how the sauce didn't take the excitement away from the chicken. After all, it's a chicken dish, not an egg + sauce dish. The portion is big enough for two girls I think, especially since it's quite salty so u need rice to eat it with. Yummy :)

We were given some sort of japanese tea after the meal to wash the oil. Well the taste is... tea. But it actually wash the oil at my throat :)

Love the food here!! Definitely wanna go back.... Too bad it's really really overpriced. I know it's a high-end restaurant but come on... 130k for a chicken dish... It's too expensive...Aside from the high price and the tacky decor, I have nothing to complain. The food is yummyyyyy :)

Meet Asmet, he's the one that order extra rice to finish those katsu hehe

Toranomon

Toranomon is a yakiniku place in Grand Indonesia. Located in the same lot as Katsusei, I think they belong to the same group. I once browsed the menu and amazed by the price, didn't have the nerve to try :p Then... Came along Ratu Lebah!!! She celebrated her bday there so the food was on her, yippeeeeee thanks hon :)

The place itself offers privacy. U wouldn't think u are still in a mall... Too bad the decor is nothing special. Just some tatami room and sofas with standard wooden decoration. They provide a beautiful Japanese-garden-like smoking room, it was kinda cool.

The food:
1. Utage Big Plate (Rp. 1.375.000)

A big plate full meat!!!! The beef used is wagyu but unfortunately I don't know what grade. According to the waiter, this set uses the highest grade of wagyu compared to the other set. The set include a big cut of sirloin, tenderloin, gyu tan and some other cuts that I don't know (some Japanese/English name I can't remember). The meat was super tender, it melts in my mouth :) Sooo good... The marbling of the meat is so beautiful (and dangerous, hello cholesterol)

There are two types of sauce used for grilling, the sweet one and the salty one. I prefer the sweet one...  But even though the meat has been dipped in the grilling sauce, we still have to dip it in the other sauce given, otherwise the meat is gonna be a bit tasteless. There are two types of sauce to dip the meat before we eat it. The first one is rather sour and salty, the other one is nutty and salty. I don't know the name... :( I prefer the sour salty one since the nutty is too powerful, it covers the original taste of the beef

2. Ohgi Big Plate (Rp. 575.000)

This set rank third in term of price. BUT, this set has chicken in it. The chicken was standard... Just like Hanamasa's chicken.. I think for 575K, they really need to put more chicken. Chicken is like super cheap rite? The sauces are the same as the Utage.

3. Gyu Tan (Rp. 135.000)

The tongue was thinly sliced and then grilled. I love tongue!! But... This one is just ok, maybe I prefer it as steak not sliced like this.

4. Tiramisu (Rp. 35.000)

It was yummy...The presentation was cute and very appetizing. The tiramisu was big, creamy and sweet, just the way I like it :) The sponge cake is soaked in rum and it was perfect... I haven't taste a tiramisu this good for a while haha

5. Mango Pudding (Rp. 35.000)

The mango pudding was just ok, a bit too jelly. A pudding especially mango has to be thicker than jelly, also it should have a deeper taste than jelly. Toranamon's is a mango jelly not mango puding.

Despite the high quality of beef, Toranomon didn't serve that high level of food. It goes below my expectation. The sauces need improvement... They should accentuate the beef, Toranamon miss a note on that one.

ps: Special thanks to Ratu Lebah for treating us, wish u and your baby the best hon :)
